"I like hard-boiled eggs," she muttered. She stared at the floor.
"Ah?"
"I like 'em hard-boiled, I say," she shouted into the cracks on the pale green linoleum.
He shook his head and laughed. His good hand was poised above the carton. Six eggs smoothed into the rough gray cardboard.
"Eh. I thought you'd like live eggs, now."
"Why would I like living stuff?"

He thought.

"Well, I like little yellow chicks. Aren't they cute? Fluffy and all. All wobbly. So warm and sleepy like that. You know." &nb hatchlings
